First Meeting of the Indonesian Lakes Forum

The first meeting on the Indonesian Lakes Forum was held on 4 June 2003 in Jakarta, Indonesia at the office of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia. Approximately 200 participants attended the meeting representing: related headquarters of government institutions; provincial governments; regional offices of the Ministry of Environment; NGOs on lakes protection from both national and regional levels. LakeNet and ILEC were also represented at the meeting.

The Meeting was addressed by H.E. Minister of Environment and the following speakers:

1. Mrs. Liana Bratasida, Deputy Minister of Environment, on The Conditions of Lake Management in Indonesia;
2. Dr. Satoru Matsumoto, ILEC-Japan, on the World Lakes Vision;
3. Ms. Haryatiningsih representing Dr. David R. Barker, LakeNet, on International Networking of Lake Management;
4. Prof. Dr. Payaman Simanjuntak, Chairman of the Lake Toba Heritage Foundation and Chairman of LakeNet's International Steering Committee, on Social, Economical and Cultural Potentials of Lakes;
5. Mr. Tukul Santoso, Operational Director of Jatiluhur Reservoir, on the Benefits of Jatiluhur Reservoir; and
6. Mrs. Wayan, Regional Environmental Office, Bali, on the Conditions of Lakes in Bali.

The Meeting agreed to establish the Indonesian Lakes Forum, by approving a Working Group consisting of:

1. Deputy Minister of Environment
2. Research Center of Limnology
3. Wetland
4. University
5. Lake Toba Heritage Foundation
6. Lakes Forum of North Sulawesi
7. Regional Government of Banten Province
8. LakeNet
9. Jatiluhur Reservoir
10. Parliament, Commission VIII
11. Journalist

The Working Group was charged with the following responsibilities to be accomplished over the next three months: form the Executive Committee of the Forum, finalize a draft of the Indonesian Lake Vision and develop a Plan of Action of the Forum.
