David Read Barker Ph.D.- Co-founder

David Read Barker, co-founded and became president of LakeNet in 1997 after having served on the Board of Trustees of its predecessor organization, Monitor International, since 1994. Educated as a medical anthropologist, he holds a Ph.D. degree from the New School for Social Research and was a co-founder of Management Systems International. Dr. Barker has more than 35 years experience in promoting environmentally sustainable development in poor nations through partnerships among government, community groups and businesses to conserve biological and cultural resources, and improve national prosperity and human living conditions. David retired as president of LakeNet in 2008 at which time the nonprofit organization was dissolved. He continues to manage this website privately along with his wife, Lisa Borre.

Lisa Borre - Co-founder

Lisa Borre co-founded LakeNet and served as program director from 1997-2008. A native of the Great Lakes Region of the U.S., she has devoted her career to protecting and restoring the health of lakes and wetlands around the world. She has a Bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Vermont and a Master's degree in Environmental Management from Yale University. From 1990 to 1997, she was the coordinator of the Lake Champlain Basin Program and facilitated the development of a comprehensive watershed management plan. In 2008, the nonprofit that served as the Secretariat for LakeNet was dissolved, and Lisa retired as its vice president. She continues to manage this archival website on a private basis. She is now an active member of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network and contributing author to National Geographic’s Water Currents blog. Lisa and husband David Barker are avid sailors. They have cruised extensively on the Chesapeake Bay, U.S. Atlantic coast and to all five of the Great Lakes. They took an extended voyage aboard Gyatso, their 37-foot sailboat, visiting the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Black Seas and wrote a sailing guide, The Black Sea, published in 2012.
