Sunday, September 21, 2003

The Times of Zambia (Ndola)

At least 67 people have been mauled by crocodiles in Kasongole area on Lake Mweru Wantipa in Luapula Province this year.

In an interview at the weekend Chifunabuli member of Parliament Kennedy Sakeni expressed worry at the number of people being killed by crocodiles on that lake

Mr Sakeni said on average five people were being killed every month, a situation which needed to be addressed quickly. Kasongole village is in Kaputa district.

He said there was urgent need to crop the crocodiles which had increased in numbers.

He said he had informed Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) on the need to crop the reptiles but no effort had been made.

He said authorities at ZAWA had pegged the census and other requirements to crop the crocodiles at K23 million.

Mr Sakeni who is Home Affairs deputy minister said the fish stock in the other rivers and lakes nearby had depleted forcing most of the people to flock to Mweru Wantipa which still had plenty of fish.

Mr Sakeni said people could not be stopped from fishing as their livelihood was dependent on that.

He said the tourism industry had also been affected as visitors were fearing to go on the boat cruise.
